Trysting Place

Dear Lord, I want each day that comes
To share some part with Thee,
Where I can sit at Thy dear feet
And hear Thee speak to me.
A place where I can turn aside
And leave the cares of life,
Where I can get the strength I need
To banish storm and strife.
A quiet, holy, trysting place
Where Thou to me canst give
The very blessing that I need;
Here would I rest and live.

~ Martha Grenfell

Make me Thy fuel

Give me the Love that leads the way,
The Faith that nothing can dismay,
The Hope no disappointments tire,
The Passion that’ll burn like fire.
Let me not sink to be a clod,
Make me Thy fuel, O Flame of God.

~ Amy Carmichael

On Christ the solid rock I stand

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ name.

On Christ the solid rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

~ Edward Mote, 1834

Loved

Loved—
Not for great deeds and heights attained,
Not for accomplishments and fame;
Not for moments when I succeed,
When I am strong, when I believe;
Not for times when I’m pressing on,
Unfazed by night, fixed on the dawn.

Loved—
For who I am, now and today,
Stumbling, groping to find my way;
A heart of dreams and fears and walls,
Of starts and stops, of peaks and falls:
A life unpolished, unprofound,
A sinner ransomed, lost and found.

~ Evelyn Sichrovsky

Sweet hour of prayer

Sweet hour of prayer, Sweet hour of prayer,
That calls me from a world of care
And bids me at my Father's Throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the Tempter's snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer.

Feelings

"Feelings come and feelings go, And feelings are deceiving;
My warrant is the Word of God - Naught else is worth believing.

Though all my heart should feel condemned
              for want of some sweet token,
There is One greater than my heart
              Whose Word cannot be broken.

I'll trust in God's unchanging Word till soul and body sever,
For, though all things shall pass away,
              His Word shall stand forever!"

~ attributed to Martin Luther

The Coming Year

"Dear Master for this coming year
Just one request I bring:
I do not pray for happiness,
Or any earthly thing--
I do not ask to understand
The way Thou leadest me,
But this I ask: Teach me to do
The thing that pleaseth Thee.

I want to know Thy guiding voice,
To walk with Thee each day.
Dear Master make me swift to hear
And ready to obey.
And thus the year I now begin
A happy year will be--
If I am seeking just to do
The thing that pleaseth Thee."

Better Than a Light

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied,
“Go into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
So I went forth, and finding the hand of God,
Trod gladly into the night.
He led me toward the hills
And the breaking of day in the lone East.
So heart be still!
What need our human life to know
If God hath comprehension?
In all the dizzy strife
Of things both high and low,
God hideth His intention.

Minnie Louise Haskins, 1875–1957

A moment in a morning

A moment in a morning
Ere the cares of day begin,
Ere the heart's wide door is open,
For the world to enter in,
Oh, then alone with Jesus,
In the silence of the morn,
In heavenly, sweet communion,
Let your joyful day be born,
In the quietude that blesses,
With a prelude of repose,
Let your soul be soothed and softened,
As the dew revives the rose!

‘Twill Soon be Past

  • 1. Only one life, a few brief years,
    Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
    Each with its days I must fulfill,
    Living for self or in His will;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    3. Give me, Father, a purpose deep,
    In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
    Faithful and true whate’er the strife,
    Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    5. Only one life, yes, only one,
    Now let me say, “Thy will be done”;
    And when at last I’ll hear the call,
    I know I’ll say “‘twas worth it all”;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    7. Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.
    And when I am dying, how happy I’ll be,
    If the lamp of my life has been burned out for Thee.

  • 2. When this bright world would tempt me sore,
    When Satan would a victory score;
    When self would seek to have its way,
    Then help me, Lord, with joy to say;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    4. Oh let my love with fervor burn,
    And from the world now let me turn;
    Living for Thee, and Thee alone,
    Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    6. Only one life, yes, only one,
    Now let me say, “Thy will be done”;
    And when at last I’ll hear the call,
    I know I’ll say “‘twas worth it all”;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    8. Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.
    And when I am dying, how happy I’ll be,
    If the lamp of my life has been burned out for Thee.

    The joy of unselfish giving

    Time is not measured by the years that you live
    But by the deeds that you do and the joy that you give.
    And each day as it comes brings a chance to each one
    To love to the fullest, leaving nothing undone
    That would brighten the life or lighten the load
    Of some weary traveler lost on life’s road.
    So what does it matter how long we may live
    If as long as we live we unselfishly give.

    ~ Helen Steiner Rice

    Count your blessings, name them one by one

    When upon life's billows you are tempest-tossed,
    When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
    Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
    And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

    Count your blessings, name them one by one;
    Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
    Count your blessings, name them one by one;
    Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

    Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
    Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
    Count your many blessings, ev'ry doubt will fly,
    And you will keep singing as the days go by.

    When you look at others with their lands and gold,
    Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
    Count your many blessings, wealth can never buy,
    Your reward in Heaven, nor your Home on High.

    So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
    Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
    Count your many blessings, Angels will attend,
    Help and comfort give you to your journey's end.

    I had to take time to pray

    I got up early one morning
    And rushed right into the day;
    I had so much to accomplish
    I didn't have time to pray.

    Troubles just tumbled about me
    And heavier came each task.
    Why doesn't God help me, I wondered,
    He answered, "You didn't ask."

    I tried to come into God's presence,
    I used all my keys at the lock.
    God gently & lovingly chided,
    "Why child, you didn't knock."

    I wanted to see joy & beauty,
    But the day toiled on grey & bleak,
    I called on the Lord for the reason--
    He said, "You didn't seek."

    I woke up early this morning
    And paused before entering the day.
    I had so much to accomplish
    That I had to take time to pray.

    Not Much To Offer

    I have not much to offer
    To Christ, my Lord and King;
    No wealth, no might, no wisdom,
    No noble gift to bring.
    "Five loaves and two small fishes?"
    But what alas are they
    Among the throngs of hungry
    Who crowd life's troubled way?

    "Five loaves and two small fishes?"
    Not much, dear heart, 'tis true;
    But yield them to the Master
    And see what He can do!
    Placed in His hands of mercy
    Thy little will be much.
    'Tis not thy gift that matters
    But His almighty touch!

    A Blank Page

    The New Year like a book lies before me;
    On its cover two words, “My Life,” I see.
    I open the covers and look between —
    Each page is empty, no words can be seen,
    For I am a writer, I hold the pen
    That’ll fill these pages to be read by men.
    Just what kind of book will my book be,
    My life written there for others to see,
    Each day a page written, one by one —
    Will it be worthwhile when finished and done?
    Lord, help me keep these pages clean and fair
    By living the life I’d have written there.

    An Exchange of Wills

    I want my heart so cleared of self
    That my dear Lord can come
    And set up His own furnishings,
    And make my heart--His home.

    And since I know what this requires,
    Each morning while it's still,
    I slip into that secret room,
    And leave with Him--My WILL,

    He always takes it graciously,
    Presenting me with His;
    I'm ready then to meet the day
    And any task there is.

    And this is how my Lord controls
    My interest, my ills,
    Because we meet at break of day,
    For an EXCHANGE OF WILLS.

    ~ Anna Jane Granniss

    Art thou lonely?

    Art thou lonely, O my brother?
    Share thy little with another!
    Stretch a hand to one unfriended,
    And thy loneliness is ended.

    ~ John Oxenham

    Another year to love Him

  • Another year to love Him
    Whom I have loved so long;
    Another year to praise Him
    In glad triumphant song.
    Whate’er the future holdeth
    Of sorrow, toil, or pain
    His precious Love endureth
    Forevermore the same.

  • Another year with Jesus!
    I thank Thee, Lord, today
    For Thy unfailing presence
    Along life’s rugged way.
    Guide me, O blest Redeemer,
    Teach me to do Thy will,
    And Thine own perfect purpose
    In me each day fulfill.
